Michael Smith
Managing Partner
Investment Strategist

Mike is the Managing Partner of Kauri Asset Management and Chairman of the Investment Committee. He is also the Portfolio Manager of the Kauri Growth Portfolio.

With over 15 years of experience within the financial services industry, Mike possesses an outstanding acumen and extensive insight when it comes to global equity markets and a range of financial services products. This experience includes risk, investment management, wealth management and more.

Mike previously worked for Capital 19, working closely with his clients to build an investment portfolio with approximately $100m in funds under management. He has also worked with the likes of Commonwealth Bank, while his background extends to chemistry. In alignment with Kauri’s investment principles, Mike is a regular co-investor in the firm’s portfolios.

Afiq Malek
Financial Planner 

As Co-founder of Kauri Asset Management, Afiq brings with him a breadth of knowledge and experience in the portfolio management sector, as well as a pursuit for excellence that is at the core of his ethos.


Courtesy of his 8 years’ experience as a senior investment advisor, Afiq’s expert knowledge of financial markets spans across global equities, options and futures. Over the years he has developed an impeccable judgement when it comes to local ASX-listed shares, in addition to a specialty focus analysing US markets.


With a background in Economics from the University of Sydney, Afiq has worked with a wide range of clients to help them gain financial security in their own lives. As a strategic thinker, Afiq has an ability to summarise fundamental and technical information in a way that provides clarity and discipline to investment decisions.

George Wong
Senior Financial Planner

George is a Financial Advisor at Kauri Asset Management with extensive knowledge across the financial spectrum.


Before joining Kauri Asset Management, George previously worked at Dixon Advisory and E&P Financial Group. He brings across a breadth of wealth management knowledge and strong experience in superannuation, tax-effective wealth creation, retirement planning, investment management and wealth protection.


George is passionate about being an adviser as he gets the opportunity to make a significant impact on his clients lives. George also believes in the importance of forming personal connections with his clients to create long term, meaningful relationships and prioritises education so clients feel empowered to make informed decisions about their financial future.


George is a Certified Financial Planner®, holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours in Econometrics and Major in Finance) from the University of Sydney, a Diploma in Financial Planning from Kaplan and attained accreditation by the Stockbrokers Association of Australia to provide advice on securities and managed investments. George also completed the FASEA Financial Adviser Exam in June 2020.

Samuel Waldron
Research Anaylst

Samuel is a Research Analyst at Kauri Asset Management. He brings with him extensive knowledge as well as a passion for investing and financial markets.


Samuel has a fundamental approach to identifying and monitoring investment opportunities. This involves conducting detailed bottom-up research, industry and competitor analysis, and valuation of equities and other asset classes in Australia and the US. His background in economics also allows him to incorporate top-down factors into his analysis, having comprehensive knowledge of the domestic and global economy.


He has previously worked in banking as well as economics consulting in property. Samuel holds a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Finance and Economics) from the University of Sydney. He is currently pursuing a CFA qualification as he looks to further sharpen his investment knowledge.

Christine Hua

Christine joined the Kauri team in mid-2021 as a paraplanner, bringing a bundle of enthusiasm and detailed retirement planning knowledge to the firm. Christine’s approach to client management is one that aligns with Kauri’s mantra, making every genuine effort to remember the distinguishing details of our clients, including their needs and interests.


With a passion that centres on recognising the need for, and accessibility of financial planning for all, Christine believes those who learn to invest and seek financial advice can make a profound change in their lives and break away from the status quo.


Previously, Christine completed a Bachelor of Business at the University of Technology, Sydney, majoring in Finance and Economics. That background served Christine well, opening up a former career with retirement specialists Challenger, where she was tasked with developing their admin processes, complaints handling and responses, as well as training and mentoring their contact centre. Amid her move from retirement planning to financial planning, Christine is currently enrolled in a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning with Kaplan.

Rene Anthony
Research Anaylst

As Research Analyst for Kauri Asset Management, Rene brings with him a wealth of analytical experience, including work with various financial services firms, as well as corporate businesses across a range of industries within the private sector.


Before joining Kauri, Rene’s most recent undertaking is a business development and digital marketing consultancy he founded in early 2016. Over the last 4 years he has worked with the likes of SelfWealth, Finder and IPO Society, among others, to hone their digital strategy and produce a suite of research reports covering equities and financial markets.


Rene holds a Master of Management from the University of Melbourne, which was attained with first-class honours. He is also working towards various finance-related qualifications.
